MEMORY LANE 1925: The legendary BESSIE SMITH in my mind stands above the rest with her version of W.C Handy’s “St. Louis Blues”. Other artists have covered it, but not with the same feeling, depth and passion as “The Empress of the Blues”. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to have the legendary LOUIS ARMSTRONG backing you up on the cornet. The Smith/Armstrong version is in the Grammy Hall of Fame.

FLASHBACK 1997: One of my favorite songs of 1997 was from Massachusetts pop/rock singer-songwriter PAULA COLE. “Where Have All The Cowboys Gone” is her only Top 10 hit of her career. It peaked at #8 on the Billboard HOT 100. The song was nominated for three Grammy’s (Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Song of the Year and Record of the Year). She lost all three, but did take home the Grammy for Best New Artist.

FLASHBACK 1997: New York R&B female group ALLURE and R&B group 112 covered the 1986 Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam hit “All Cried Out”. ALLURE’s version actually charted higher than the original. #4 on the Billboard HOT 100 as compared to #8 for Lisa Lisa.

I’m so over the 140 character limit. That’s why I do most of my microblogging on Friendfeed. Twitter always has maintenance issues. Last night, Twitter would not let me see anything with @georgekiriyama. Twitter is like the VHS of social networking sites. VHS sucked compared to Betamax, but everyone turned to VHS, because consumers decided VHS would be the standard.
